Reflux Gourmet (Alginate Therapy)

Plain-language guidance from Dr. Dillard and the SSCGA care team — what to expect, how to prepare, and how to keep relief lasting after every procedure.

What Is Reflux Gourmet?

Reflux Gourmet is an all-natural alginate therapy used to relieve the symptoms of acid reflux, including GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) and LPR (laryngopharyngeal or "silent" reflux). Its key ingredient, alginate, is a natural substance harvested from brown seaweed (kelp) that has been used safely in foods for over a century.

It comes as a smooth, dessert-flavored liquid — available in Vanilla Caramel and Mint Chocolate — in both bottles and convenient single-serve packets. The formula is vegan, gluten-free, and made with natural ingredients.

How Alginate Therapy Works

Unlike medications that reduce how much acid your stomach makes, alginate therapy works mechanically:

  • As you swallow it, the alginate lightly coats and soothes your throat and esophagus
  • When it reaches your stomach, it combines with stomach acid to form a thick protective gel "raft" that floats on top of your stomach contents
  • This raft acts as a physical barrier at the top of the stomach, helping block acid and stomach contents from refluxing up into your esophagus and throat

Because it physically blocks reflux rather than just neutralizing acid, alginate therapy is especially helpful for LPR (silent reflux), where even small amounts of reflux reaching the throat can cause hoarseness, throat clearing, cough, and the sensation of a lump in the throat. It can be used alone or alongside acid-reducing medications your provider has prescribed.

How to Take It

  • Take 1 teaspoon (5 ml), or as directed by your provider
  • For best results, take it after meals and before bed — the times when reflux is most likely to occur
  • Make it the last thing you swallow — do not eat or drink anything after taking it, or you will wash away the protective coating and break up the raft
  • If you take other medications at bedtime, take them first and the alginate last

Good to Know

  • Reflux Gourmet is a natural supplement, not a prescription drug — it does not require a prescription
  • It is paraben-free, glycerin-free, gluten-free, and vegan
  • The formula includes a small amount of sodium bicarbonate, which helps neutralize acid and float the raft — if you are on a strict sodium-restricted diet, check with your provider first
  • It is available online at refluxgourmet.com and through major retailers such as Amazon and Walmart

Important Notes

  • Alginate therapy relieves symptoms but does not replace any reflux medication your provider has prescribed — do not stop prescribed medications without talking to us first
  • Continue to follow your reflux diet and lifestyle recommendations (see our GERD Diet Handout) for the best results
  • If your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment, contact our office — further evaluation may be needed
