Home Mold and Mycotoxin Testing

Plain-language guidance from Dr. Dillard and the SSCGA care team — what to expect, how to prepare, and how to keep relief lasting after every procedure.

Why Test for Mold at Home?

Mold and its byproducts (mycotoxins) are common environmental triggers for nasal congestion, sinus pressure, chronic cough, allergy symptoms, and other respiratory complaints. If you suspect mold in your home — after water damage, a musty odor, or ongoing symptoms that improve when you're away from home — at-home testing can help confirm a problem and guide next steps.

Testing Options

EC3 Mold Screening Test Kits — A quick, do-it-yourself screening option. Specially treated agar plates are exposed to air or a suspect surface, sealed, and observed over several days for mold growth. Results are typically visible within about 5 days and help confirm whether a problem exists and where it's located.

Mycotoxin Test Kits — A more advanced, lab-analyzed option that measures your level of exposure to mold toxins (mycotoxins) rather than just detecting mold spores. Samples are collected at home and sent to a lab for analysis.

Environmental Mold and Mycotoxin Assessment (EMMA) — A comprehensive combined assessment that evaluates both mold species and mycotoxin levels in a single, more detailed report.

How the Screening Plates Work

The EC3 screening plates contain agar that is specially treated to grow mold and yeast selectively. You expose a plate to room air or wipe it across a suspect surface, then seal and store it as directed. Over the following days, visible growth on the plate indicates the presence and relative amount of mold in that location.

When to Test

  • After any water damage, leak, or flooding
  • If you notice a persistent musty odor
  • If sinus, allergy, or respiratory symptoms improve when you're away from home and return when you're back
  • After remediation, to confirm the problem has been resolved
  • Periodically, as ongoing maintenance to catch new problems early

Important Notes

At-home mold testing kits are a helpful screening tool, but they don't replace a professional home inspection or medical evaluation. If you have ongoing sinus, allergy, or respiratory symptoms that you think may be related to mold exposure, please discuss testing results and symptoms with your provider so we can determine the best next steps for your care.
